BALLROOM:

The Ballroom Scene is a powerful and transformative subculture that began in the 1920s in New York City’s Black and Latinx LGBTQIA+ communities. It was created as a response to racism, homophobia, and transphobia; a space where people rejected by their families could find belonging and love.

Within Ballroom, people formed chosen families called “houses.” These houses provided care, mentorship, and support for those facing challenges like housing insecurity, discrimination, and isolation. Beyond being a creative outlet, Ballroom became a vital space for community healing and advocacy; promoting HIV/AIDS awareness, mental health support, and LGBTQIA+ rights.

The heart of Ballroom culture is the ball; a vibrant competition where participants express themselves through categories like Vogue, Runway, Realness, and Creative Costume. These performances celebrate individuality, defy societal expectations, and tell powerful cultural stories.

Categories like “Realness” emphasize gender presentation and societal roles, while “Vogue” blends athleticism with expressive dance. Beyond competition, Ballroom has left an indelible mark on mainstream culture, introducing terms like "shade," "realness," and "slay" while inspiring media such as Paris Is Burning and Pose. Despite its growing visibility, Ballroom remains a safe and empowering space for its members, championing racial equity, LGBTQIA+ rights, and social justice.
